Some people are just so easily offended these days. Tabard recently wrote about the fury of one reader of the Sun, who was incensed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “shockingly filthy stage show”, Fleabag. Now an outraged church minister is the latest to take issue with the theatre – this time slamming a “vulgar and immoral” production of Rocky Horror Show.
Enraged pastor Peter Simpson, of Penn Free Methodist Church in High Wycombe, wrote a letter of protest to his local venue, the Wycombe Swan, branding its production a “corruption of public decency”. As reported in the Bucks Free Press, the pastor said: “What kind of wholesome fare is going to be served up by a show containing lyrics such as, ‘I’ll get you a satanic mechanic, I’m just a sweet transvestite’? “A show featuring transvestism will inevitably be contemptuous of Christian morality. Cross-dressing is condemned in the bible.
“The show represents a corruption of public decency, by the way in which people on stage are dressed, by their erotic poses, and by the depiction in the plot of illicit sexual relations.” To really hammer the point home, he added: “The website also says, ‘be warned; this show has rude parts’. So, by the theatre’s own admission, the show is vulgar and immoral.”
It seems unlikely he’ll be introducing I Can Make You a Man into his hymn repertoire any time soon.
The Rocky Horror Show is touring UK venues until November 2
