We adopted a consistent methodology for buying tickets, to compare prices on as close to a like-for-like basis as possible.
For the purposes of defining West End theatre, we considered all theatres in full membership of the Society of London Theatre. The definition of commercial theatres and subsidised or grant-in-aid venues also followed SOLT’s definition.
Prices were taken when buying tickets online for each show. We went to a show or venue’s official website and followed links to its official vendor. If more than one vendor was listed, we took the first option (unless another was billed as having no fees).
Prices are quoted for tickets to the evening performance on Saturday, April 6, 2013. In the case of venues which were dark, in preview or sold out, we have quoted prices for the next available nonpreview Saturday evening performance. Prices are quoted for a single ticket with appropriate booking fees. Seats which are not available to book online – for example, standing tickets – have been excluded. Standing tickets for Shakespeare’s Globe were also not included.
When an option for delivery was available, we selected ‘collect at box office’. If this was not available, we selected the next cheapest option and this fee is included in the total fees. When booking fees were included in the original total ticket price, we did not count these separately. Extra fees refer to charges on top of the original price quoted.
