A quarter of a century ago (July 20, 1995), we reported on the strange case of an acting agent who was unable to get in touch with their clients due to “exploding pigeons”:
“Staff at an acting agency have declared war on the pesky birds whose antics are putting their business on hold,” we reported at the time.
“Vic Leech from Solomon Artistes Management is blaming exploding pigeons for damaging telephone lines around Southend.
“He said: ‘These pigeons are landing on overhead wires and exploding with such force that they took out over a thousand phone lines last week. It has been complete chaos here. We sent loads of actors to auditions and we have no way of finding out the outcome.’
“Vic has been struggling through with mobile phones and fax machines, but his real concern is that his clumsy feathered friends will have cost his clients top jobs.
“ ‘It is devastating,’ he complained. ‘We only moved here three weeks ago because our last office was burgled so often. Now all this is happening and it is very worrying. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than popping these birds in a pie and eating them.’ ”
