Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre has announced plans to stage a performance of its summer show with Polish captions, in what it is claiming will be a first in the UK.
The theatre’s production of Stepping Out will be performed alongside Polish captions next month to cater for the town’s large Polish community.
It will use the theatre’s captioning technology, usually used for deaf or hard-of-hearing audiences, to display Richard Harris’ script in Polish, which has been translated by volunteers.
SJT associate artistic director Lisa Cagnacci said: “There’s a substantial Polish community in Scarborough – we’ve been showing Polish films in our cinema for some time now, and they’ve been very well attended, so we thought it was time to take it a step further.
“We really hope our local Polish community will enjoy a great night out.”
The special performance of the play will take place on July 19. Other accessible performances will include a British Sign Language performance on July 13, and Dementia-friendly and captioned performances on July 18.
