Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s production of Evita is to transfer to the Barbican next year as part of the venue’s new season.
The season also features two productions directed by Ivo Van Hove; The Glass Menagerie starring Isabelle Huppert and Death in Venice.
Jamie Lloyd’s production of Evita will run from June 27 to August 22, 2020, with press night on July 7. This is part of an ongoing relationship with Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, which saw the transfer of Jesus Christ Superstar this year.
Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, which is a Barbican co-production with Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe, will run at the Barbican Theatre from June 5 to 11.
This forms part of a year-long programme of work called Inside Out, which also features Internationaal Theater Amsterdam’s production of Death in Venice, based on Thomas Mann’s novel and adapted by former Dutch poet laureate Ramsey Nasr.
The Inside Out programme also includes Viviana Durante Company’s Isadora Now, which is a tribute to American dancer Isadora Duncan, and Belarus Free Theatre’s Dogs of Europe, based on the novel by Belarusian author Alhierd Bacharevic.
Split Britches’ Last Gasp and Drowntown by Rhiannon Faith are also part of the Inside Out programme.
Elsewhere, the season includes the UK premiere of Orlando, based on Virginia Woolf’s novel, which is adapted by Alice Birch and directed by Katie Mitchell and Lily McLeish. Orlando is performed by the Schaubühne Berlin.
Toni Racklin, head of theatre and dance at the Barbican, said: “Our new January to August 2020 season in the Theatre and the Pit sees a range of boundary-breaking artists engaged with today’s fast-changing world.
“Whether by looking afresh at classic texts or giving a voice to those whose stories are seldom heard, these thought-provoking performances take us in new and unexpected directions.”
