Emma Rice’s Wise Children is developing an online school offering theatremaking courses including strands on writing, directing, designing and composing.
Playwrights Tanika Gupta and Joel Horwood and designers Vicki Mortimer and Lez Brotherston are among the tutors signed up to lead the courses, which are intended for beginners and intermediate levels.
The School for Wise Children’s Summer Spread comprises seven courses running in June and July, each for six people.
Three of these places will be free – available on a means-tested basis – with the other three costing £135 per person.
The courses include adapting and directing for emerging directors, led by Rice and Wise Children’s associate director Laura Keefe.
Gupta and Horwood will lead the writing for theatre course, while Mortimer and Brotherston will teach an introduction to theatre designing course.
The plans are an extension of Rice’s existing School for Wise Children, which offers courses, placements, workshops and mentoring for theatremakers.
Other courses will explore lyrics, music and storytelling for theatre, with Wise Children’s director of music Ian Ross and musical director Nadine Lee, while sound designer Simon Baker and associate Charlie Simpson will tutor a sound effects course.
The final two courses will cover starting a theatre company – led by Wise Children executive producer Poppy Keeling and Pravanya Pillay from theatre company Stomping Ground – and an introduction to movement direction by Wise Children’s movement director Etta Murfitt and performer Nandi Bhebhe.
Each course will include at least nine hours of contact time, plus time for students to develop their own projects, and will be taught using a mix of group and individual sessions.
Rice said: "After a period of mourning for our old working habits, we realise that we could just as easily create new ones. We have pooled our technical and artistic knowhow and curated a fantastic offering of bespoke courses.
"Not in spite of lockdown, but because of it, we are exited and ready to take the school to a new level and explore a new platform."
The first course begins on June 15 and they will run until July 17. Details: wisechildrendigital.com
