Bromsgrove’s new arts centre The Artrix will open in December with an official launch scheduled for Easter 2005.
Students from North East Worcestershire College, the venue’s project partner with Bromsgrove District Council, will be the first to use the three-storey centre together with local community groups in the run-up to the grand opening.
The £2.6 million complex is part of the council’s plan to help bring a variety of performing arts to the area including musical theatre, opera, drama and dance.
Billed as a multi-functional centre for the arts, the auditorium can seat 350 although if the orchestra pit is in full use capacity drops to around 250. The seating can also be retracted to provide a flat-floored auditorium for exhibitions.
Council leader Dennis Norton said: “We have waited a long time for this arts centre and now we have got it, we want as many people as possible to use it and consider it their own.”
Students from NEW College will be able to use the Artrix as part of their performing arts educational programme. The centre has teaching rooms the same size as the stage so students can practice even when the auditorium is in use.
Bromsgrove also hosts an annual music festival featuring international performers of folk, jazz and classical music which may be linked into the programme.
