West London venue the Playground Theatre has begun to make free meals for local elderly and vulnerable people while its doors are closed to the public.
The Playground Theatre Cafe Covid-19 Food Relief Campaign is run by Rima Sams and her son, Mars. Together with volunteers they are making about 500 meals a week and giving them to people who need them most, including the elderly and vulnerable people who are self-isolating.
Ingredients for the meals are being provided by the Felix Project, a charity that reclaims surplus food from the food industry. The meals are collected by the Kensington and Chelsea Mutual Aid Group and are provided in containers that can be heated on delivery.
The campaign is run entirely by volunteers with a GoFundMe page to raise money for the costs of running the kitchen.
Rima Sams said: “There is shocking food poverty in North Kensington, which, given the close proximity of extreme wealth in the Royal Borough, is unbelievably sad. A conversation with a local friend regarding food-bank needs going through the roof in the first week of lockdown inspired me to want to help to get meals to the elderly and most vulnerable.”
