Costume makers behind the TV series His Dark Materials have started an initiative to sew scrubs for medics working to fight Covid-19.
The initiative, Helping Dress Medics, has been set up by members of the BBC and HBO series costume department, including costume supervisor Dulcie Scott.
A fundraising page has already raised more than £8,500 in two days, which will go towards buying materials.
Writing on the page, Scott said: “Our aim is to keep it local and to supply to the hospitals closest by.
“This should make things quicker, keep costs down and ideally keep any risk of contagion to a minimum.
“We are liaising with hospital staff directly in the areas we live and taking advice from them about what they need, so that we can specifically help them. The nature of how the virus is spreading means that the demand for scrubs is especially high.”
Scott is based in the north Cotswolds, while other costume makers will coordinate efforts from Cardiff – where His Dark Materials was filmed – and Plymouth.
Any excess money raised will be passed on to other companies who are making equipment for the NHS.
