Cameron Mackintosh will receive this year’s Gielgud Award for Excellence in the Dramatic Arts.
The accolade is traditionally handed out as part of the UK Theatre Awards, which takes place on October 27, however this year it will be presented in a separate ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of the Gielgud Theatre’s renaming on October 28.
The theatre, which is owned by Mackintosh, was known as the Globe Theatre until 1994 when it was renamed after the actor John Gielgud.
Previous recipients of the Gielgud Award include Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Patrick Stewart and Richard Eyre, who won in 2018.
Emma Rice has already been announced as the winner of this year’s outstanding achievement to British theatre prize at the UK Theatre Awards, which will be hosted by Jodie Prenger.
The ceremony takes place at London’s Guildhall, with presenters including Denise Black, Lesley Joseph, Gary Rice and Ashley Zhangaza.
Nominees include Mark Gatiss, Emmanuel Kojo, Rebecca Trehearn and Jenna Russell. Sheffield Theatres and Manchester’s Royal Exchange picked up the most nominations, with five apiece.
