A bursary set up in memory of director Bob Carlton is to fund an assistant director post at Birmingham Repertory Theatre, with the inaugural award going to Will Ashford.
Carlton died last year, and the bursary in his name is awarded by the theatre with the JMK Trust.
Ashford will use the £2,350 bursary to assist on the theatre’s production of A Thousand Splendid Suns, directed by Roxana Silbert.
Emily Carlton, daughter of Bob, said: “Dad believed passionately that the arts should be accessible to everyone, and was saddened by the growing culture of unpaid work across all creative industries, that can make these careers unthinkable for those without personal connections or a financial safety net. He would have been delighted to see a programme that gives talented young people, outside London, their first chance.”
The bursary has been established to provide an opportunity for a director connected to the Midlands, where Carlton was from.
Ashford said the bursary provided him with a “real sense of financial security”, and described it as an “extraordinary opportunity to work with Roxanna and the team”.
Carlton ran the Queen’s Theatre in Hornchurch from 1997 to 2014.
