Andrew Lloyd Webber is planning a musical based on the fairytale Cinderella.
The composer revealed he is collaborating with Tom MacRae, who wrote the book and lyrics for Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, and writer and actor Emerald Fennell.
He said the musical would be given a modern twist.
Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, he said: “They have remade Cinderella into a completely modern, feisty girl, Every piece of the story is followed, but it will be turned around so it’s not at all what you expect it to be. It just turns the whole thing around on itself.”
He added: “It takes it away from the world of magic and fairy godmothers, but it’s not going to be anywhere nearly as modern as, say, Los Angeles in 2023.”
The Hollywood Reporter said the composer would be fitting in work on the project around the start of shooting the film version of Cats in November, and expects to have a Cinderella score completed by the end of the year.
It is expected to be produced for the stage by Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group, but he did not rule out launching the musical on another platform.
“But I’m a theatre animal, so my feeling is that it will be for the stage. In any case that’s where it will end up,” he said.
He indicated it could take around two years to complete the musical.
