Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s former managing and artistic director David Conville has been commemorated with a sculpture in the grounds of the venue.

Artist Lee Simmons was commissioned to make the memorial sculpture to honour Conville, who died last year. He retired in 2012, following a 50-year association with the theatre.

The sculpture was unveiled officially on May 23, with Open Air Theatre supporters Christopher Biggins and Celia Imrie attending.

According to Simmons, the sculpture “derives from an abstract interpretation of the auditorium” that aims to capture the “essence of what it feels like to play in the open, exposed to the elements”.

The theatre said the sculpture “honours David Conville’s contribution, dedication and love of this place”.

The theatre opened in 1932, but was taken over by Conville in 1962, founding the venue as it is today.
