Royal Exchange’s West Side Story to return in 2020

West Side Story at the Royal Exchange in Manchester will return to the venue next year, following what the theatre is describing as “unprecedented popular demand”.

The musical is directed by Sarah Frankcom, and has new choreography by Aletta Collins [1].

It will return to the theatre from April 18 to May 23, 2020.

Frankcom said: “West Side Story was such a radical piece of work when it was first staged and I’m delighted that our new production has caught the imagination of today’s audiences, and that the electricity of it all – the story, the music, the dance – is still so urgent in 2019.”

She added: “The demand for tickets has been incredible so to be able to bring the show back next year and give people another opportunity to see Leonard Bernstein’s masterpiece is fantastic. Our unique in-the-round theatre brings viewers right into the action and to be able to do that all over again with a new audience is really exciting.”

The current production stars Andy Coxon and Gabriela Garcia, but casting for the 2020 revival has yet to be announced.

The venue said next year’s restaging would be standalone, and would not form part of its 2020 season.

Frankcom has recently announced she will be leaving the theatre to run LAMDA.
