New amphitheatre opens in Tunbridge Wells

Tunbridge Wells Amphitheatre

A 100-seat outdoor theatre has opened in Tunbridge Wells in Kent, which will host productions during the summer months every year.

Situated in the ground of the Beacon pub, the Beacon Amphitheatre’s programme will feature a combination of local and touring productions.

These will range from plays to small-scale operas, and the venue will also be available for weddings.

The Beacon Amphitheatre is owned by a group called I’ll Be Mother, which is made up of the team behind the Beacon pub, with restaurants the Twenty Six and Kingdom. They will work with a resident theatre company to stage shows.

It is opening with a production of John Buchan’s The 39 Steps from the first resident company, Get Out of My Space, which runs until July 13.

Artistic director of Get Out of My Space Toby Cornwell said: “Ultimately, this is a huge first for Tunbridge Wells; to have an open air theatre that has the capacity to present a range of work is fantastic.

“It’s the perfect setting for a whole evening out with beautifully crafted food from The Beacon.

“We feel that, in our own small way, with hearty food and breathtaking views, we are bringing live entertainment into a new era to combat the likes of screen-based entertainment, whilst staying true to traditional theatre.”
