Nearly 30% think performers’ social media should be vetted prior to casting – The Stage poll

More than a quarter of respondents to a poll by The Stage think performers’ social media should be vetted as part of the audition process.

It comes after Seyi Omooba, who had been due to play the lead role in a forthcoming revival of The Color Purple, left the show as a result of a row over a historic Facebook post in which she said she believed homosexuality was wrong and that people could not be born gay.

In a poll on The Stage website, 28% of the 262 respondents said they thought performers’ Twitter and Facebook posts should be scrutinised as part of the casting process. But nearly three-quarters (72%) disagreed, saying individuals’ social media should not be checked before they are cast in a role.

Omooba’s 2014 post was shared widely on social media following the announcement that she was to play Celie, a character who has a gay relationship, in Leicester Curve and Birmingham Hippodrome’s production of The Color Purple.

Discussions around the issue included whether casting directors and others involved in the casting process should look into individuals’ social media in order to avoid situations such as this.

Equity has since urged its members to exercise caution when sharing on social media.
