More than 170 babies attend West End’s first parent and baby performance

More than 170 babies were brought to the West End’s first parent and baby performance at the Vaudeville Theatre, with producer Nica Burns confirming she is open to doing more in London.

Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s play Emilia was the first West End show to host a parent and baby performance, on a matinee on April 24.

The production was attended by 182 adults, with 173 babies and 152 push chairs.

Burns, who is a co-producer on the show and owns the Vaudeville, said more front of house staff were employed to work the special performance, with the grand circle providing space for many of the buggies.

The theatre’s American Bar was turned into a baby changing space for the event.

Burns described the atmosphere as “extraordinary”, adding: “I don’t know who was the most excited – the audience, the producers, the theatre staff, the cast. The atmosphere was vibrant, happy and extremely noisy.”

She added that her co-producers – Eleanor Lloyd, Kate Pakenham and Eileen Davidson – “would like to thank everyone involved”, and praised the show’s cast for “a great performance while handling an extremely vocal and participative audience”.

“Nimax is very proud to be the first West End theatre owner to pioneer this parents and babies performance and would be happy to share all that we have learned with our colleagues,” she told The Stage.

She said she would open to doing it again, but with the “right piece”, adding that some musicals would be ideal for a parent and baby performance.

Audience member Becky Turner-Jones said she had “the best afternoon” and added: “I hope this becomes standard across the West End.”

Playwright Malcolm added she had “never experienced anything like it”.
