West End stars Richard Fleeshman and Jamie Muscato have warned that “astronomical” West End ticket prices risk alienating younger audiences.

They were speaking at a celebration event for the nominees of the WhatsOnStage Awards 2019 at the Hospital Club in London.

Fleeshman, who is currently appearing in Company [1] at the Gielgud Theatre, told The Stage: “I know there are lots of amazing [discount ticket] programmes out there but, generally [speaking], West End prices are astronomical, though thankfully we’re nowhere near the levels of Broadway.”

He added: “It means the audience you want to invite to the theatre, a new and younger age group, just doesn’t have the disposable income.”

Fleeshman added that he wanted to see more outreach programmes to get young people involved in theatre.

Muscato, who recently appeared in Heathers [2] at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, echoed these comments.

He said: “The prices of the tickets are ridiculous now.

“With the uncertainty of Brexit, is anyone going to have any money to come to the theatre?”

He added: “I think we should [get more] younger people in, like Heathers did. We had so many young people that came to the theatre for the first time, which will hopefully then spur them on to see something else.”
