Stage One launches initiative to widen access to producer training
A new initiative has been set up to being more people from under-represented backgrounds into commercial theatre producing.
Bridge the Gap, from producer training charity Stage One, will offer participants a free place on one of its three-day new producer workshops – usually costing £425 – as part of the scheme.
Participants will also receive four masterclasses focusing on career progression and development, regular theatre tickets and access to press nights, placement on a year-long mentorship scheme and monthly group meetings with Stage One staff.
Anyone can apply for the year-long scheme, but applications are particularly encouraged from people from non-white and LGBTQ+ backgrounds as well as those with a disability or at a financial disadvantage. There will be 10 places on the pilot year of the scheme.
Stage One is encouraging applicants who have never worked in commercial producing before and those who are looking for a career change, as well as those who have never had a successful application onto one of Stage One’s other development schemes.
Stage One’s chief executive Joseph Smith said: “Change needs to happen across our whole industry. We want to encourage and be a part of that change, which is why we have created Bridge the Gap.
“We identified that there were people who weren’t engaging with our training – whether that be for personal, financial or other circumstances – and wanted to address it. We hope that this bespoke scheme can welcome a better represented pool of producers in to Stage One and enable them to participate in the work we do.”
People in full-time employment, as well as those who are unemployed, are able to apply, with the programme designed to adapt to their schedule.
Contributions will be made towards participants’ travel, childcare and accommodation expenses where necessary.
Applications will open on August 6, with a start date in September 2018.
