Sierra Boggess to star in West Side Story at BBC Proms
John Wilson will conduct a concert version of West Side Story, starring Sierra Boggess as Maria, at this year’s BBC Proms.
It marks the first time the complete musical has been performed in concert in the UK, and is one of several Bernstein works at the Proms this year in celebration of his 100th birthday.
West Side Story also stars Broadway performer Ross Lekites as Tony, as well as students from Arts Educational Schools and Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and the John Wilson Orchestra. It will have two performances on August 11 at the Royal Albert Hall.
The line-up also includes a performance of Bernstein’s On the Town, which Wilson will again conduct.
Louise Dearman will perform the role of Hildy, with Nathaniel Hackmann as Gabey, accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra.
This will take place on August 25.
As part of the celebrations, Marin Alsop – who was a student of Bernstein – will conduct the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Bernstein’s second symphony. This will take place on August 27, what would have been the composer’s 100th birthday.
Elsewhere, the Proms programme will also include a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury in Alexandra Palace’s restored Victorian Theatre. The theatre’s renovation is near completion and will be opened for the one-off performance on September 1.
It will feature opera singers Mary Bevan and Neal Davies.
