Martin Sutherland will lead the team that delivers Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture in 2021.

The appointment means Sutherland will leave his post as chief executive of Northampton Arts Management Trust, which includes the Royal and Derngate, the Core at Corby Cube and the Errol Flynn Filmhouse in Northampton.

At the Coventry City of Culture Trust, Sutherland will be executive director and chief executive, providing overall leadership for the organisation and “ensuring that Coventry’s profile, reputation and cultural engagement delivers a high level of respect within the city and region, as well as nationally”.

Coventry was announced as the third host of the UK City of Culture scheme [1] in December, and will hold the title for a year in 2021.

Sutherland said: “Working in neighbouring Northampton, while leading a dedicated team and developing close partnerships with artists, audiences, funders, local authorities and the University, I never lost sight of our mission to make sure that our arts venues were part of the wider regeneration of the area.

“The role here in Coventry allows me to make that the key focus of my work while supporting the team to deliver the incredible vision the city showed as it was bidding.”

The recruitment for a replacement at Northampton Arts Management Trust will begin imminently.
