Director Richard Eyre is to receive this year’s Gielgud Award for Excellence in the Dramatic Arts.

The prize will be presented at the UK Theatre Awards, which will be hosted by Tyrone Huntley.

Ian McKellen will present the prize to Eyre at the ceremony on October 14 at London’s Guildhall.

The Gielgud Award for Excellence in the Dramatic Arts was established by the Shakespeare Guild in 1994 and previous recipients include Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Eileen Atkins and Vanessa Redgrave. Last year it was won by David Hare.

Other presenters at the ceremony will include Wendi Peters, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Ria Jones, Matt Cardle and Emma Williams.

It has already been announced that Maxine Peake will be presented with the outstanding contribution to British theatre award, to be presented at the ceremony by Conrad Lynch and Sarah Frankcom.
