Ramin Gray leaves Actors Touring Company following misconduct investigation

Director Ramin Gray

Ramin Gray has stepped down as artistic director of Actors Touring Company with immediate effect.

Gray’s departure comes two weeks after he was issued with a formal written warning [1] over claims of inappropriate behaviour that have been the subject of an investigation.

A statement from ATC said Gray had decided to move on after a “period of reflection and discussion”. He has remained on a leave of absence for the duration of the investigation, which started following several allegations in November 2017 and concluded in May.

The statement also gave more details about the nature of the complaints, confirming there were “no findings of physical or sexual misconduct” among the complaints, which amounted to “inappropriate verbal conduct”.

“However, the months of public scrutiny, and the strain of the process itself, have taken their toll, and a new start seems appropriate for all,” the company said.

“ATC acknowledges with gratitude the contribution Ramin has made to the company’s artistic success in the eight years he has been with us, in particular his recent groundbreaking work on The Events, Winter Solstice and The Suppliant Women. We wish him every success in the future,” it added.

ATC stressed that Gray had been engaged fully with the investigation, which it said was monitored by the Independent Theatre Council, with Equity and Arts Council England also kept informed.
