Kinky Boots star Matt Henry will star in a new production of One Night in Miami… at Nottingham Playhouse, as part of a season that also includes the return of Beth Steel’s Wonderland.

The theatre has also announced that playwrights James Graham and Amanda Whittington, and the director Matthew Xia have been made associate artists.

Henry will play the soul singer Sam Cooke in the regional premiere of Kemp Powers’ One Night in Miami…, directed by Xia.

The play is an imagined account of a real-life event when Muhammed Ali – then still known as Cassius Clay – celebrates becoming heavyweight champion of the world in a Miami hotel room with three friends; Cooke, activist Malcolm X and American football player Jim Brown.

It runs in Nottingham in June, designed by Grace Smart.

The season, Adam Penford’s second as artistic director, also sees him direct a new production of Wonderland, which follows the 1984 miners’ strike.

The theatre will also stage a version of David Almond’s novel Skellig, adapted by Almond himself and directed by Lisa Blair, while Adele Thomas will direct a comedy drama, The Memory of Water, by Shelagh Stephenson.
