Nimax withdraws plastic straws from its West End venues
Theatre group Nimax has stopped handing out plastic straws at its West End venues in an effort to become more environmentally friendly.
Nimax owns six theatres in the West End including the Apollo, the Garrick and the Vaudeville.
Chief executive Nica Burns said the group had stopped handing out plastic straws in response to a campaign run by London’s Evening Standard newspaper, which aims to stop single-use plastic straws being handed out in the capital. She added that the theatre group was looking at other ways of reducing plastic use.
“We have stopped using plastic straws and are researching alternatives to our use of plastic elsewhere. Thank you to the Standard and Westminster council for their leadership. If we all work together we should be able to collectively reduce our plastic usage significantly to help our environment,” she said.
The Barbican has also withdrawn plastic straws from its bars and restaurants.
Managing director Nicholas Kenyon told the Evening Standard: “We will go further in the coming months as we explore in our 2018 season, The Art of Change, the roles and responsibilities of citizens, artists and arts centres in responding to the challenges of future sustainability.”
Earlier this year, the Lyric Hammersmith launched a campaign to reduce the amount of single-use plastic in its premises.
