Dancers from Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures will take up residency at a school in north-east London as part of the first ever London Borough of Culture.
New Adventures will be the first in a series of artist residencies as part of Waltham Forest’s year as London Borough of Culture , and will be based at Roger Ascham Primary School, where Bourne himself attended.
The dancers will work with the whole school over three months, culminating in a performance at Walthamstow Assembly Hall.
The London Borough of Culture initiative, led by London mayor Sadiq Khan, will run throughout 2019, opening with a launch event from January 11 to 13.
The plans for the year also include a “theatrical concert” called Giant, based on Oscar Wilde’s 1888 story The Selfish Giant, which will be performed in Epping Forest.
Khan said: “I am determined to ensure that all Londoners get the opportunity to experience our cultural riches regardless of their background or where they live, and to increase the level of participation in culture across London.”
He added: “Culture has the power to inspire and provide positive opportunities for the next generation, so I’m particularly pleased that Waltham Forest will be involving young people across the borough in their year-long programme of celebration.”
