Martin Shaw and Maureen Lipman are to star in the West End premiere of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man.
They are joined by Jack Shepherd, Jeff Fahey, Honeysuckle Weeks and Glynis Barber in the play, which runs at the Playhouse Theatre from February 24 to May 12.
The play focuses on a former secretary of state who is running for the post of president, alongside “an ambitious populist newcomer”. The play was written and produced on Broadway almost 60 years ago, but did not come to the West End then because American politics were not considered of interest to UK audiences.
Simon Evans is directing the show, which will have set and costumes by Michael Taylor, lighting by Chris Davey and sound by Ed Lewis.
It is produced by Bill Kenwright and will have a press night on March 5.
