London Student Drama Festival moves to the West End
The London Student Drama Festival is to make its Theatreland debut this year, with support from Nimax Theatres.
Set up in 2013 as a new-writing showcase, the student-led festival aims to celebrate the best of student theatre in and around the capital.
Now, with the support of Nimax Theatres’ co-owner Nica Burns, the festival’s New Writing Competition finals will be held in the West End for the first time.
The top five shows of the competition will be performed to a panel of judges and members of the public at the Duchess Theatre on March 19.
Judges will offer feedback and award pries for best direction, best performance and best writing. Previous judges include Simon Stephens, Ian Rickson, Ella Hickson and Sam Steiner, with West End Producer confirmed as one of the 2018 judges.
Burns said: “Like many practitioners today, I lived in Dramsoc at university. I learnt a lot.
“The London Student Drama Festival gives students a chance to showcase their work in the heart of Theatreland. We are delighted to welcome them to the Duchess Theatre.”
A spokesman for the festival said: “We believe that student theatre deserves a spot at the forefront of London’s biggest stages, if only for one night a year. This year, we will prove why.”
Applications to perform in the 6th LSDF New Writing Competition semi-finals, held at the Pleasance Theatre in London on March 1 and 15, close on February 9.
