Holby City actor Gemma Oaten is launching a new theatre company, which will include a training school for young performers.

The company, called Amigo Productions, has been co-founded with entrepreneur Richard Lamberth.

Amigo Productions will support eating disorder charity SEED by raising money through cabaret shows and corporate performing arts experiences, as well as through running workshops for people who have struggled with eating disorders.

Oaten will also provide one-to-one acting coaching through the company.

Debut show Somebody Call Me a Cabaret, starring Julie Atherton, will run at the Phoenix Arts Club in London on August 19.

The next show will be at Crazy Coqs, Live at Zedel, in London on August 29.

Part of Oaten’s plan for Amigo Productions is to open a theatre school in 2019, which will provide affordable workshops for young people hoping to audition to drama school. Further details of this are to be announced.

Oaten will initially run Amigo Productions from her home, but she plans to open premises for the company in the South East, her hometown of Hull and across the UK.

Co-founder Lamberth said: “There is a clear gap for a star-led production company that works for everyone and respects and empowers talent. Having worked with Gemma previously it was a no-brainer to get involved.”

Oaten added: “I suffered with anorexia for many years. The performing arts were vital in helping me survive the worst struggles with eating disorders so I know first-hand how transforming an opportunity it can be to get to do something you love.

“Now feels like the right time to help other young people, from all walks of life, flourish and follow their dreams, just as I have.”

Atherton, who will continue to be involved with Amigo Productions, said: “Gemma is one of the kindest, generous souls I’ve ever met, she is beautiful outside and in. I’m honoured to be part of her cabarets and can’t wait to share the stage with her again.”
