Hackney Empire to revamp leadership framework

Hackney Empire is recruiting an executive director and a director of artistic programme

Hackney Empire has announced a restructure of its senior management team to align its business and artistic operations more closely.

The east London theatre will be led in future by an executive director and a director of artistic programme. It will aim to “provide a strong infrastructure so that the business and the programme operation act in tandem”.

Its previous model included a creative director and chief executive. Former creative director Susie McKenna left the theatre last year [1], while its chief executive Clarie Middleton steps down [2] next month to become principal of Rose Bruford College.

McKenna continues her association with the theatre as executive creative producer in a freelance capacity.

According to the theatre, the new structure will allow the artistic and business sides of the organisation to work more closely on areas such as audience development.

The framework should “consolidate the achievements of recent years by developing strong programmes and maintaining a vibrant and resilient organisation that serves its audience and embraces current and future challenges and opportunities”, the venue said.

Recruitment for the two positions will begin immediately, with the leadership team supporting the forthcoming spring season in the short term.

This includes English Touring Opera’s The Marriage of Figaro and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s touring production of Hamlet, starring Paapa Essiedu.
