Graeae Theatre and Selina Thompson to feature in First World War Centenary season
Works from Graeae Theatre Company and performer Selina Thompson will feature in a season of work responding to the centenary of the First World War.
14-18 Now – an arts organisation set up to programme a creative response to the centenary of WW1 over five years – has announced its final season of events.
Graeae will present This is Not For You, an outdoor performance playing tribute to wounded war veterans directed by the company’s artistic director Jenny Sealey.
Sealey said: “So many of the conversations I’ve had with wounded men have been about how hard it is to come back from war as a disabled person, and there’s nothing out there to commemorate the living.
“This is Not For You is remembering those who came back from the First World War disabled, and it’s also thinking about wars ever since.”
Thompson’s Sortition will be produced with people aged under the age of 30 who have never voted.
She said: “My piece is looking at a method of creating governments where they are selected at random – more like a jury service – rather than an election. I’m trying to question the value of the current representation in government which we have.”
Over 150 artists and organisations working across all mediums have been commissioned as part the 14-18 Now 2018 season.
Other commissions include contemporary dance work Contagion by Shobana Jeyasingh, which explores the global Spanish Flu pandemic, and a film project commemorating Armistice Day from director Danny Boyle – with full details of this to be announced.
Jeyasingh said: “I was really interested in the fact that the Spanish flu killed significantly more people than the First World War, and it really was a world event. While the First World War was a political thing, this was a purely biological and viral affair.”
The 306: Dusk by the National Theatre of Scotland and site-specific work 100: Unearth from theatre company WildWorks will also feature in the programme as well as Anu and CoisCeim Dance Theatre.
Previously announced works from Zoonation: The Kate Prince Company, Akram Khan, and Isango Ensemble will also feature.
