Funding announced for £2.5 million cultural research hub

Funding has been announced for a £2.5 million research centre dedicated to assessing the value of culture within society.

Billed as the first institution of its kind, the Centre for Cultural Value is jointly funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Arts Council England.

The money will fund academic research into the impact of the arts, including theatre, on all areas of society including the economy, communities and health and well-being.

It could be based at a higher education institution or independent research organisation anywhere in England, with organisations able to bid to host the centre.

Jane Steele, director for evidence and learning at the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, said: “The collaborative approach [between funders] is a key feature of the proposed centre.

“It will help to foster networks, communities of interest and greater mutual understanding between people working in different sectors, art forms and academic disciplines.”

Steele added that the centre would develop a programme of events and conversations encouraging collaboration between arts practitioners and researchers.
