Venue operator Sweet, which runs spaces at the Edinburgh and Brighton fringes, is to open a second permanent space in Brighton and expand its pop-up portfolio in the city.
Sweet, which began operating in Edinburgh in 2010, has been running venues at the Brighton Fringe since 2016.
It specialises in creating pop-up theatre spaces for fringe festivals in hotel and conference facilities.
This year it will increase its offering in Brighton by two, taking its operating spaces to five at the annual theatre festival in May, ranging from 25 to 100 seats.
The two new venues will be at the Duke of Wellington pub near Brighton station and the Werks on Middle Street. The latter will have two spaces programming theatre, comedy, cabaret and family events.
Sweet has also announced that the Duke of Wellington pub will offer a year-round programme of theatre and other events under the Sweet banner. It will be known as Sweet @ The Wellie and is the operator’s second permanent events space in Brighton.
Artistic director and venue manager JD Henshaw said: “We are delighted to be bringing work into the heart of Brighton for the 2018 fringe. As with all exciting new things, we cannot wait to see the work that will be gracing these fantastic new spaces this year.
“Add to that the joy of bringing work all year round to a second permanent Brighton site, and it certainly looks like 2018 is going to be an amazing year.”
