Equity has formed a new branch in Sheffield, which has been created due to increasing demand from the union’s members.

The new Sheffield General Branch will become one of 24 general branches in the UK. Equity also has a number of branches dedicated to variety, as well as outposts in the US and an online-only branch launched in 2016.

At present, the branch representing members who live in Sheffield holds meetings in Leeds, and the other nearest general branch is Manchester.

The Sheffield group was brought about by a petition to the union by actor Liam Gerrard, who said: “There used to be a Sheffield branch many years ago and now there is renewed demand from a lot of younger members and performers basing themselves here.

“It’s not hard to see why. It’s the fourth-largest city in the country, it has a huge producing theatre, there is so much live performance being made here at a grass roots level and there are two universities with excellent drama courses.”

He added that the branch was already in talks to host special meetings for members, Q&As with visiting casting directors and other industry professionals.
