Chris Sonnex appointed artistic director of London’s Bunker Theatre
Chris Sonnex has been named new artistic director of the Bunker Theatre in London.
Sonnex, who has previously worked as community producer and artistic associate at the Royal Court in London, takes over the post from co-founding artistic director Joshua McTaggart with immediate effect.
The Bunker has also announced its autumn season, the last to be programmed by McTaggart, which begins on September 11 with the world premiere of Eris by John King.
“Under Joshua’s brilliant leadership, the Bunker has achieved phenomenal success and it is a great honour and privilege to be taking over from him as artistic director,” Sonnex said.
He added: “I am no stranger to the revolutionary nature of theatre. It has transformed my life on numerous occasions. As a working-class boy from a London council estate, art gave me a focus and something to be proud of.
“In this exciting role I hope to continue enabling and championing the community of artists and theatre makers originating from under-represented backgrounds.”
Other highlights in the Bunker’s autumn season include a week-long festival from Pint Sized, showcasing five short plays, which runs from October 1 to 6 and includes a series of free industry-led workshops for writers, actors and directors.
Knaive Theatre’s War with the Newts runs from October 9 to 26 and Flux Theatre will present Chutney by Reece Connolly from November 6 to December 1.
