Double Olivier award-winning choreographer Stephen Mear has hit out at drama school CPA Studios for failing to inform its patrons of its closure.

Mear, who is a patron of CPA Studios, said he only found out about the schools’ collapse on social media.

CPA Studios wrote to students on August 7 to inform them the school had closed because of financial problems, with staff made redundant and 52 students left with no course to return to in September.

Writing on Twitter, Mear criticised the fact patrons had not been informed.

“As a patron of ‪@CPAStudios‬, I am beyond furious that I find out through social media that the collage has closed. Not even an email to let me know. The trustees should be ashamed. If anyone can help any of these students please contact me. I’m in total shock,” he said.

CPA Studios could not be reached for comment, but has tweeted today (August 8) about the situation.

“Thank you so much to everyone showing their support to students and staff and to all the colleges offering help and auditions to our students during this very difficult time. Please be assured we are passing on all college audition offers etc on to our students,” it said.

However, the parent of one student who attended CPA said the college should be “ashamed”.

Karen Beatens said the school had taken the fees for its new term last week.

“They should be ashamed that they took our term fees from our bank account last week as well. Let’s hope we get it back very quickly,” she said, adding it was “stressful enough” looking for another college for her son without “worrying about the money as well”.
