Birmingham Royal Ballet and ZooNation join associates scheme at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre
The Mayflower Theatre in Southhampton has launched an associates scheme that includes Birmingham Royal Ballet, English National Ballet and performer Earl Carpenter.
Mayflower chief executive Michael Ockwell said the idea was to appoint associates who “share the theatre’s vision. This is to create a closer relationship between the audiences and the artists”.
The scheme will strengthen the venue’s Engage programme, which offers a range of workshops for young people and adults.
According to the Mayflower, the selected associates will “also contribute to the width and breadth of the programme to give more local people access to the creative arts”.
Ockwell also said the associates scheme would enable the theatre to develop “stronger links” with dance companies. In addition, Northern Ballet and ZooNation Dance Company were named associates.
“The associate scheme confirms our commitments to present these wonderful companies on a regular basis. We will develop a programme that uses the performing arts to engage with our local community,” Ockwell said.
Composers Simon Slater and Zoie Golding, founder of dance company Zoielogic, join West End performer Carpenter as associate artists.
Carpenter played the leads in The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. He said he shared the theatre’s vision of developing audiences and engaging with young performers.
