BECTU seeks 4% pay rise for theatre workers
Entertainment union BECTU is seeking a 4% pay increase for theatre workers in the UK.
This would see hourly pay for the lowest-paid grade of theatre workers aged over 25 increase from £7.50 to £7.80.
The pay claim for a 4% increase to all rates of pay and allowances for workers was submitted to membership body UK Theatre, which represents theatres around the country.
BECTU is currently in preparation for talks with the theatre body ahead of a pay review due on April 1.
Theatre staff covered in the BECTU and UK Theatre agreement include box office, administration, technical, performance, front of house, stage door, catering and wardrobe staff. There is a separate agreement for workers in the West End.
Helen Ryan, BECTU assistant national secretary, said the pay claim acknowledges the latest RPI figure, which stands at 3.8%, and also considers increases to the real living wage in November, which set a London rate of £10.20 an hour and a rate of £8.75 elsewhere.
Ryan said: “There is an ambition from UK Theatre to try to work together with the view of paying the real living wage to all theatre workers.
“If we only offer 1% or 2% pay increases, then the gap between the lowest-paid workers and the real living wage will get bigger.”
The pay claim coincides with BECTU’s wider survey of members and non-members into pay rates across venues covered by the UK Theatre collective agreement.
BECTU aims to use the results of this survey to help review and update the agreement.
UK Theatre has declined to comment.
