Amazon-owned audiobook giant Audible has revealed plans to produce live theatre productions in the UK.

This follows a move into producing in the US, where Audible co-produced the New York transfer of the Royal Court’s Girls and Boys [1], starring Carey Mulligan.

Audible’s first stage production in the UK, co-produced with China Plate, is one-woman show On the Exhale, which runs at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

A representative for Audible told The Stage the company had “definite plans” to produce more theatre in the UK, and it had recently appointed a new head of theatre to oversee this side of the business.

The plans were revealed at an event marking the launch of Audible’s new partnership with drama school LAMDA [2], which will provide support to train performers in audio drama.

Senior director of content at Audible UK Laurence Howell told The Stage: “It’s still early days yet, but this will be another way for us to work with new talent, to work with the acting community and to help raise awareness of audio.”

He added: “Opening up options for people to hear great drama on stage is very important. We’re working with companies in the US and we are starting to work with theatre companies here.”

Following its run at the Edinburgh Fringe, On the Exhale will be recorded at Audible’s studios and made available for download.

Earlier this year, Audible launched a £3.6 million commissioning drive [3], giving six writers the chance to create new audio plays for the company.
