A year of international cultural events has been launched in celebration of Swedish film director and writer Ingmar Bergman.

This will include a previously announced production of Bergman’s After the Rehearsal/Persona directed by Ivo Van Hove at London’s Barbican Theatre, which runs from September 27 to 30.

Other events to have been announced in the UK include a Bergman retrospective at the BFI Southbank in London.

More events are to be announced leading up to, and over the course of 2018, which marks 100 years since Bergman was born.

Around 50 Bergman theatre events have been announced internationally, including a European tour of Scenes from a Marriage and an Ingmar Bergman International Theatre Festival at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Sweden.

Liv Ullmann, former partner of Bergman, said: “Ingmar Bergman has enriched, not only my life, but an entire world through his masterpieces in film, literature and theatre. The celebration of the Ingmar Bergman centenary throughout 2018 will truly acknowledge him as one of the most influential and creative icons in cinematic history. I am convinced that his vast legacy will continue to rightfully honour his brilliant artistry.”

Speaking at the London launch of the centenary, she added: “I am very happy to be here and I am a little moved. Ingmar cannot be summarised in an hour, nor by the whole of 2018.”
