Watermill to revive Jerusalem in 2018 season

Jerusalem will run at the Watermill in 2018
by -

The Watermill Theatre is to stage the first major revival of Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem as part of its 2018 season.

The play, which won its original star Mark Rylance an Olivier award for best actor, will be revived at the Watermill, directed by Lisa Blair.

As part of its new season, the theatre will also host the return of musical Teddy by Tristan Bernays and Dougal Irvine, which ran at Southwark Playhouse in 2015.

This production will be directed by Eleanor Rhode and produced by Sarah Loader for Snapdragon Productions in association with the Watermill.

Following its run at the Watermill, in Newbury, the production will tour and will also run at the Vaults in London.

A new black comedy, Burke and Hare, about the infamous Victorian murderers William Burke and William Hare, will premiere at the venue.

Written by Tom Wentworth, it is directed by Abigail Pickard Price and will undertake a rural tour following its run at the Watermill.

The season also includes a revival of The Rivals, adapted by Beth Flintoff and directed by Jonathan Humphreys.

Artistic director Paul Hart will direct A Midsummer Night’s Dream, performed by the theatre’s in-house ensemble and set to the music of Nina Simone and Billie Holiday.

Launching the season, Hart said: “I’m delighted to introduce our 2018 season, which further cements The Watermill’s reputation for producing theatre of national import in our small, rural idyll.”
