Studio Wayne McGregor has pledged to give away 5,000 hours of rehearsal time for free at its new studios every year to address the “overwhelming need” for affordable dance space.

Artists at all stages of their career will be able to use the company’s dance facilities for free at its new multimillion-pound studio in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, east London, which opens on March 31.

Executive director Rebecca Marshall announced the FreeSpace initiative, elaborating on previous plans to let artists use the studios for free, at the East London Dance Enterprise Ideas Summit in Stratford.

Marshall said: “We have tried not only to create a space for Wayne and company but to respond to what is going on in the wider dance world.

“There is an overwhelming need for appropriate and affordable space in London and we want to create a place people can come together and think about the wider context of what they are doing.”

She added: “We will give 5,000 hours of studio space per year to artists at all stages of their careers, from young dancers to emerging artists.

“We wanted to show that giving space to artists has real money value for artists and for ourselves, to support artists so they can use money they raise from other places to be able to pay dancers.”

Marshall said that in return for each week of free studio space, they are asking artists to contribute one day of engagement or learning and activity for communities to experience at no cost.

She added: “What we hope FreeSpace will do will be to allow artists to experiment and provide risk-taking opportunities.

“We hope we are going to support the making of new work or just the experimentation with new work with no demands on outcome.”
