Sky Arts to sponsor National Theatre Live
Sky Arts has been announced as the first headline sponsor for National Theatre Live in the UK.
The partnership will launch with the live screening of the NT’s Hedda Gabler on March 9.
The deal will see Sky Arts content screened before NT Live broadcasts, as well as opening up opportunities for further “creative collaboration”, details of which have not yet been announced.
It will also offer benefits for Sky customers, the channel confirmed.
This year, NT Live will broadcast a record 11 productions to cinemas, including Angels in America – from the NT – as well as London’s Old Vic Theatre’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and Obsession at the Barbican Centre, London, starring Jude Law.
The partnership is part of a commitment to investing in, and facilitating wider access to, the arts, the channel’s director, Phil Edgar-Jones, said.
“We believe that art should be for everyone, everywhere, and we want to expand boundaries and break down barriers, bringing the best of the arts to the widest possible audience. We are delighted to be partnering with National Theatre Live and look forward to expanding our collaboration over the coming months.”
The NT’s head of broadcast Emma Keith added: “This new initiative seeks to increase access to our work for those audiences who might not otherwise have the opportunity to see it and a service such as Sky Arts, which is dedicated to bringing the best of culture into people’s homes, is a great fit.”
A spokeswoman from Sky Arts declined to say whether there were plans to screen NT Live productions on the channel in the future.
