Scarborough’s Futurist Theatre has moved a step closer to demolition after plans to tear it down were approved.

In a long-running dispute over the theatre’s future, campaigners sought a High Court intervention and began legal proceedings earlier this year in a bid to save the building, but this was unsuccessful.

Scarborough Borough Council agreed in January to spend £4 million knocking down the derelict theatre, and planners have now approved detailed proposals for the building’s demolition and stabilisation of the cliff behind it.

Among those to criticise the decision was the Theatres Trust, which said it was “extremely disappointed” that the council had decided to approve the Futurist’s demolition.

“Retention and reuse of the landmark Futurist as a performance venue had such clear public support and was a real opportunity for the council to listen to the wishes of its community,” the trust said.

It went on to call on the communities and local government secretary Sajid Javid to review the decision.
