Rambert launches open auditions for new young company
A worldwide talent search has been launched for early-career dancers to join a new ensemble.
Contemporary dance company Rambert has launched Rambert2 in partnership with the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in Twickenham.
Open auditions will be held for dancers to join the company, with successful applicants given full financial support to live and work in London and complete an MA in professional dance performance.
Rambert2 will be the first junior ensemble attached to a UK repertory company – a model practised by companies in other countries, such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Nederlands Dans Theater.
Company members will receive financial support equivalent to the London Living Wage and be based at Rambert’s home on London’s South Bank.
Each Rambert2 dancer will complete a 12-month programme with four strands: training, performing, academic study, and outreach activity including schools’ workshops and community events.
This will include a 40-date tour of works by Rafael Bonachela, Sharon Eyal and Benoit-Swan Pouffer in autumn 2018, as well as performing Ohad Naharin’s Kamuyot for schools and teenage audiences.
Rambert chief executive and executive producer Helen Shute said: “We’re delighted to be launching Rambert2 to huge demand from an extensive range of respected venues and with the incredible support of the Linbury Trust. This feels exactly what Rambert should be doing to expand our already large UK footprint and showcase the world’s best dance artists.”
She added: “This model has been very successful in other countries, and I felt there was a real gap in the UK.”
Rambert2 will be funded through a combination of box-office revenues, Rambert’s core funding from Arts Council England and a three-year grant from the Linbury Trust. The company’s debut season is also supported by Sadler’s Wells.
Contemporary dancers at the very beginning of their careers are invited to apply from Friday December 1 to join the first Rambert2 cohort from July 2018. Open auditions will be held in London in February 2018.
