A new TKTS discount ticket office in Leicester Square has been approved by Westminster City Council.

Designed by Moxon Architects, the new two-storey building will replace the existing structure which has been operating since 1980.

It will continue to be the principal ticket office for the Society of London Theatre, and will also include a performance space.

Situated on the southern side of Leicester Square, the new building will feature a modern, sculpted exterior described by the architects as “an array of gently twisting bronze columns that appear to shift and change as you move around it”.

The approved plans include provision for an upper-floor cafe or restaurant together with a rooftop terrace that will double as a flexible performing space. The concertinaed design of the exterior also meets requirements for the new building to provide ventilation for an underground electricity substation immediately beneath it.

In an earlier statement, Moxon said the new building’s “design and purpose was inspired by both the local context and the energy requirements of the West End”.

The firm added: “The building respects and embraces the adjacent garden at the centre of the square, which is defined by statute that it provides ‘ornamental pleasure grounds or grounds for play, rest and recreation’”.

Details of when construction is due to start or expected to be completed have not yet been revealed.

SOLT has also relaunched its ticketing site, Official London Theatre, to have enhanced venue information and accessible performance listings.

Julian Bird, chief executive of SOLT, said: “Since 1908, SOLT has been at the forefront of promoting theatregoing and in the intervening years we’ve seen not only a growth in audiences, but a huge shift in the way theatre fans consume news and purchase tickets. As we look ahead to 2018 we wanted to bring our successful brands under one roof and showcase the incredible work the organisation and its members do to help ensure continued growth.

“A new TKTS booth will allow us to continue to do what we do best, unbeatable in-person customer service and discounts, as well as providing a hub for theatregoers in the heart of the West End.”
