Lamphouse Theatre in Peterborough signs up to Equity fringe pay deal

Peterborough-based Lamphouse Theatre has become the latest company to sign up to Equity’s fringe pay deal, becoming the first in East Anglia to do so.

The agreement means that all actors and stage managers working on shows with Lamphouse will receive at least the minimum wage – currently £7.20 – as well as statutory holiday pay for every hour they work, including both rehearsals and performances.

It also covers hours of work, breaks and health and safety conditions.

Lamphouse is the first theatre company in East Anglia to sign up to the fringe agreement, which was developed by Equity in 2014 to tackle the issue of low pay/no pay on the fringe.

Most participating companies are in London. However, five organisations outside the capital, including the Other Room in Cardiff, are now working on the agreement.

Artistic director Tom Fox said Lamphouse was passionate about committing to pay performers and stage managers a fair wage, adding that he was pleased to be “part of the growing movement to make this commonplace”.

Announcing the deal, Equity’s south-east regional organiser Will Holmes said: “It’s a sad fact that many actors working in fringe theatre in the UK aren’t even paid the minimum wage or protected by any kind of employment contract.

“Tom Fox has demonstrated a genuine passion for providing better working conditions throughout the process of putting this agreement together.”

Last year, The Stage reported that more than £1 million was paid out in the first year of the agreement, part of Equity’s Professionally Made Professionally Paid campaign.
