Kwame Kwei-Armah ‘humbled’ to become Young Vic artistic director
Kwame Kwei-Armah has said he is “beyond humbled, if not a little scared” to be accepting the artistic directorship of the Young Vic, which he has described as “everything I love about theatre”.
Kwei-Armah’s appointment was revealed by The Stage today (September 26), with the theatre subsequently confirming he would take the reins from David Lan in February 2018.
Kwei-Armah continued: “To lead this magnificent theatre at this time in our nation’s history, after such a visionary as David, excites me beyond words. I can’t wait to get started.”
Patrick McKenna, chair of the board said the panel’s decision to appoint Kwei-Armah had been unanimous, while Lan described it as “inspired”.
Lan added: “I welcome it wholeheartedly and will do whatever I can to support Kwame in the early days as he finds his own distinctive way to keep the Young Vic one of the great producing theatres of this country and the world.”
Kwei-Armah will announce his first season at the theatre in the new year.
