Veteran actor John Hurt has died at the age of 77.

Hurt, who enjoyed a career spanning six decades, had been suffering from pancreatic cancer, and died on January 27 in London.

He pulled out of a scheduled appearance in the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s The Entertainer last year due to ill health [1]. The role was later played by Gawn Grainger.

Hurt’s notable acting roles included parts in the Harry Potter film franchise, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Elephant Man. His final theatre role in London was in Krapp’s Last Tape at the Barbican in 2006.

He was knighted in 2015 [2] and in 2016 was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the BBC Audio Drama Awards. [3]

Tributes poured in on social media, from figures including Stephen Fry and Harry Potter creator JK Rowling.

Actor and writer Mark Gatiss said Hurt was “always a joy to behold”.

Meanwhile, playwright Jack Thorne described him as an “extraordinary man”.
