Jodie Prenger to star in Fat Friends musical
Jodie Prenger is to star in the premiere of a new musical based on Kay Mellor’s Fat Friends.
The musical, previously revealed by The Stage, is penned by Mellor, with music by Nicholas Lloyd Webber. It will open on November 7 at the Leeds Grand before touring the UK in 2018.
Fat Friends ran on ITV for five years from 2000 and starred Alison Steadman and Sheridan Smith.
Mellor, who will also direct the show, said: “The musical is funny and sad with a big story and some meaty and memorable songs. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to work with Nick Lloyd Webber, who absolutely gets my characters and world.”
Lloyd Webber said the world of the musical would be “bright, fresh, catchy and poppy”.
“My hope is that I’ve written songs that are at once accessible yet original,” he added.
Prenger described Mellor as “the most brilliant writer and director”.
The show has set and costume design by Bretta Gerecke and has orchestrations by Simon Lee.
Fat Friends is produced by Joshua Andrews and Adam Spiegel.
